PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS ALTERNATOR IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE FOR SALE. CHARLES HAS DECIDED TO USE IT, AFTER ALL. (Hugh, January 2014)
Charles Haynes has built a large ferrite alternator for a project that no longer needs it. The alternator can produce 3kW at 75 rpm with 90% efficiency. He is looking for a home for it. It’s pretty heavy though! At present it is in Vancouver, Canada.
Here are some photos. Leave a comment if you are interested in this alternator. Magnet rotors are 40 inches in diameter.
Is this still available? How much?
Sorry but no. As I wrote already in the update, he has decided to keep it. But I left the post in case people find the design interesting.
Let me know by email please ,
Thanks, RV.

Hugh,
I’ve got a large Savonius that might be a worthy mate. Please pass on my contact info if Charles’ creation is still available.
Thanks,
Brad
Hey Hugh,
Hope you’re well along with Scoraig.
I really appreciated your 2010 course.
Could this alternator be adapted for wind -or is it a low rpm machine only suitable for a high torque water stream?
Might be able to use it in the lab at the college. Any suggestions?
Take care,
Ted
hi Ted,
You could use this for a pretty enormous slow turning wind turbine. Maybe a big savonius? Or have fun in the lab but it will be expensive to buy even for this materials cost and heavy to move.
cheers
Hugh
Was this used in a wind turbine? very interesting!
It’s a prototype for a wave-power device but they have moved on to developing a new secret design instead.
Hugh
Secret design? vow…. curious to know where it is going to be used….
