Following enquiries from councillors and members of the public, The Highland Council commissioned the Building Research Establishment, an independent organisation, to evaluate all wind turbine installations on or adjacent to school sites.
Based on initial feedback from BRE, the Council has taken immediate action to temporarily suspend operations at all 16 school sites until the risks are fully assessed and any additional measures deemed necessary are undertaken.
This one was right in front of the school and it threw debris around when it failed.
The photo shows a Proven windmill that had some problems at the school on Raasay some years ago.
The Council move is a political one which seems to be belatedly catching up with the rather dangerous siting that has been going on over recent years. I don’t think that wind turbines should be sited on public buildings or in public car parks or play areas. I am not a safety fanatic but I have seen plenty of debris flying off small turbines over the years and it just seems stupid to put them this close to people unless the people have chosen to be there.
