Small wind turbine construction for development workers

Location: Naturgarten Schoenegge

Date: 3rd – 7th October 2012

With Greenstep

and Jakob Merk.

Here is Jakob during the introductory talk.

This is the 3-phase star wiring we used for the stator coils.  Each coil had 46 turns using two wires in hand 1.6 mm diameter (14awg) for charging 12-volt batteries.

Looking at the wiring diagram (WIRING.jpg) there are three coils used for each phase. If the curvature of the lines representing the wires indicates the direction in which the coils are wound, then in each single phase the coils are wound clockwise, counter-clockwise and clockwise.

Typically in a generator such as this the magnets alternate poles, north, south, north, south, etc.

Unless your using a configuration of magnets that do not use this typical alternating pattern of north-south poles, one winding is 180 degrees out of phase with the other two windings. This means, if the magnets are configured in alternating poles, that the current developed in the counter-clockwise coil of a phase is in opposition to the other two clockwise wound coils of the phase. This would result in the counter-clockwise coil negating the output of one clockwise coil, in essence only one coil, per phase, is outputting any usable electricity.

I might be wrong, or maybe I have missed something in your design, but I think my understanding of electricity is sound.

Please let me know your opinion on this.

      hi

I am sorry if this diagram is unclear but no they are all wound in the same direction. Each coil has a start and a finish. The finish of the first is to the start of the second. The finish of the second goes to the start of the third. All 3 are wound in the same direction.

Please, may I know the shape of magnet you used over the Triangular Coils? Square (block) or Trapezoidal?
