More good articles on Paul Gipe’s web site

http://www.wind-works.org/ is Paul Gipe’s site and see more links below.

Paul Gipe has published more good stuff on his web site recently about the ‘stuff that doesn’t work’ in the small wind industry today.  It’s a breath of fresh air to read his analysis of the rip-offs and scams that bedevil the marketplace.  It’s always hard to know whether to laugh or cry but it’s at least a good thing that somebody is documenting all this.  The only question is whether the purchasing public will ever learn.  It seems that people would much rather believe in a wonderful new vertical axis invention that produces twice as much power under a bush than believe the expert opinion of people who have been in the industry for decades.

Paul’s new articles:

Rooftop and Urban Wind

Honnewell Windtronics

Shrouded & Ducted Wind Turbines

Radio masts

Assessing a site for a wind turbine is easier these days with good, cheap, loggers available.  But the anemometer needs to be at a suitable height above buildings, trees etc, and not just mounted on a rooftop.

Here are three web links to telescopic masts that can be used for anemometers.

wind turbine service in France

4.2 metre, 24V battery charging machine based on my Recipe book and constructed by a Tripalium workshop in France 2 years earlier. In this video Jay Hudnall of Tieole is conducting a service of the turbine with help from the owners. I filmed it.

6 watt turbine design from Adriaan Kragten

Kragten Design VIRYA-1.04

Diameter                                                                           D = 1.04 m

Number of blades                                                             B = 3

Design tip speed ratio                                                      ld = 3.5

Mass                                                                                 including 1 m tower pipe  m = 4.85 kg

Starting wind speed                                                          Vstart = 2.6 m/s

Survival wind speed                                                         Vsurv = 30 m/s

Cut in wind speed (if started)                                          Vcut in = 2 m/s

Rated wind speed                                                             Vrated = 8 m/s

Nominal voltage                                                                12 V DC

Power at rated wind speed                                               P = 6 W

In this manual the 3-bladed VIRYA-1.04, electricity generating windmill, is described. The generator of this windmill is made of a Shimano Nexus hub dynamo type DH-2R40 or another type with similar flange dimensions. It is expected that, together with the detailed drawings, the windmill can be manufactured in a simple workshop.

photos of workshop course Scoraig April 2013

date: 20-27 APRIL

Location: Scoraig

4 participants built a 2 metre ferrite turbine (2F) for 24-v battery charging.  Also balanced and fitted some 3 metre blades to last year’s 3 metre ferrite turbine.

Photo sequence is a bit random sorry.
