I like this generator but could I use two inch by two inch round neodymium magnets for this generator with these stator coils?

Yes you can use neo magnets with this design but it will be expensive. You would probably want to reduce the number of turns per coil as the voltage will be much too high otherwise. If you email me with all the details of the magnets you have and the battery voltage then I can try to help.

I bought and read your 2F book and am gathering materials. I can’t seem to find a source in the U.S. for the 50mmX50mmX20mm ferrite magnets. I did find 2 inch by 2 inch by 1 inch. Id like to stick to the plans but would these larger magnets work? Or do you have a source you could recommend for me to purchase the correct size magnets? Thank you,

Yes I have used the 2x2x1 inch magnets in the States, and they worked very well.

Ordered the book, looking forward to it. Is it true ferrite magnet based PMGs have a voltage limit? I see references to them being safer and impossible or at the least unlikely to burn out. I am trying to come up with a durable, 15-20 mph turbine. I live in an ideal location for wind but a poor wind zone in general. 30 mph winds are so rare, I don’t think its practical to build a wind turbine for the 2-3 times a year where it puts out that power. I want to maximize 15 mph and under. Thanks for writing all this, the best part of building it yourself is you can understand and fix it!

Ferrite magnet alternators tend to be larger and heavier to achieve the same performance. This means they have more surface area for cooling. Actually you should not be burning out stators on a wind turbine unless there is something wrong with your furling system. It’s not hard to make the turbine furl. But Ferrites are nice because they have no corrosion problems. They cost less. This is offset by the larger amount of steel and copper needed but I like heavy wind turbines and I hve ome to prefer ferrites as they seem more durable.

I have written a few books over the years. But I am guessing that you are referring to my Recipe book as this is the most popular. It’s a good choice even if you plan to build the 2F to be honest as there is a lot of stuff in there that is not covered in the 2F plans.
As the years go by I learn stuff and one of the lessons I have learned is that ferrite magnets have advantages apart from just costing less. They are much more durable than ndfeb magnets (neos). So nowadays although I still help people with their neo magnet machines, any new ones I build have ferrite magnets. I have built larger ones up to 4m diameter. They work nicely the so-called 3F and 4F designs. I do have some documentation on them but the market is so slow for my books that I have not bothered to tidy them up and put them out there to be honest.
