Setting a Solis inverter to Constant Voltage mode

It’s very easy to connect a Powerspout turbine to your house (on grid) using a solar inverter such as Ginlong Solis or SMA Sunny Boy.  These two makes have been found to work well with hydro turbines, unlike some.  We have written a couple of guides to using choosing the right inverter and designing the turbine parameters correctly to match.

Up to now, Solis inverters seem to do a pretty good job of tracking the maximum power of a hydro turbine, but the software is constantly being updated which may lead to problems with performance caused by the inverter algorithm.  If the inverter fails to track to the best input voltage for maximum power, then it is possible to set the voltage manually using “constant voltage mode”.

I have prepared some notes on how to do this using the inverter screen and buttons.  Setting constant voltage mode on a Ginlong Solis inverter

The Powerspout turbine (for a grid-tied site) will usually be designed to work best at about 200Vdc but actual maximum power point voltage may vary, depending on the actual site conditions, so it will be a good idea to use a bit of trial and error to seek the best power output, while changing the chosen constant voltage.

I live off-grid in NW Scotland and have spent my life playing with wind turbines. I also love small hydros. Hands on renewable energy is my thing and I like to learn and to share my experiences.
