Jonathan Schreiber winding a coil

Thanks to Jonathan for this video with some new ideas for coil winding!

About hugh

I live off-grid in NW Scotland and have spent my life playing with wind turbines. I also love small hydros. Hands on renewable energy is my thing and I like to learn and to share my experiences.

Nice video. I recently wound some coils using a high temperature silicon added in through the whole winding. They stay neat and compact once released and you can peel away some of the surface silicon easily if you need to. It seems to me that if the coils are really tight and compact they are going to conduct heat away much better than a coil that has sprung apart and is filled with resin which is a poor conductor. I cast the stator in fibre-reinforced cement which seems to have worked well. I’ll try and get some pictures up on the Irish forum next week. The whole machine is an experiment so it should provide some entertainment if not a lot of electricity.

That instant glue idea is awesome. Using tape or string means you’d nearly have to be an octopus to keep the coil from deforming. What are those products?
Just an aside…I’m not sure I’d like to breathe that aerosol solvent. A respirator might be in order.

      Hi David,
I use ordinary superglue from the local model builder’s shop,
the spray is an activator to speed up the hardening process – it’s finished in a few seconds. Never use “Loctite”, because it’s very overpriced and there are only 3 g bottles. The bottle in the video (20 g) is enough for 6 – 7 coils, and I bought it for 4 €.
      Cheers,
      Jonathan
