Is it just an illusion or are the magnets not flat? The magnets seem to be almost level with the resin on the outer circumference but quite proud towards the middle?

The surfaces of the magnets are flat. The resin is a goo so it is not flat but almost flat. It’s a mix of resin and powder to prevent overheating and save on cost. The strength is provided by the stainless wire. this system has worked well for me over the last fifteen years or so.
