wind turbine service in France

4.2 metre, 24V battery charging machine based on my Recipe book and constructed by a Tripalium workshop in France 2 years earlier. In this video Jay Hudnall of Tieole is conducting a service of the turbine with help from the owners. I filmed it.

About hugh

I live off-grid in NW Scotland and have spent my life playing with wind turbines. I also love small hydros. Hands on renewable energy is my thing and I like to learn and to share my experiences.

Great looking little turbine Hugh. Love the tail!

I see that they use TirFors a lot. Looks like a great way to raise and lower, with a lot more smoothness and control than could be had using a tractor.

The tirfor or griphoist is the perfect tool for this job. I use cheap chinese ones that I actually like better than the big name brand. Tractors (via pulleys) may be easier with 100 foot towers but the tirfor is much safer and simpler on this scale.

      • David Simms says:

Hmm, what’s the brand name of those Chinese units ? Here, I could get used, reconditioned TirFors for about $250….6,000lb, I believe.
What I like about them is the potential for installing a turbine on ugly terrain. Tractors have to have flat land.

Yeah one of the main elements of the service was to untwist those wires. They weren’t anywhere near to causing a problem yet, but they did need a couple of dozen turns to untwist them.

The wind was not light. In that part of France there aren’t a lot of light winds, and it was cranking it out nicely. It’s a very turbulent site (hence the cable twists) so the output was all over the place, but the batteries were getting what they needed.

  4. Tom says:

That looks like a pretty substantial cable twist!
It furls in lighter winds than I would have expected? What sort of output were you getting in the final shots?

    Enjoyed the “Huge Piglet”!
