2011 edition of the Wind Turbine Recipe Book

Three years ago I produced a book of wind turbine designs to supercede my previous book “How to Build a wind Turbine”.  The new “Recipe book” explains in detail how to build six different sizes of wind turbine in any of 3 or 4 different voltages.  I still answer enquiries daily from people who want help with different sizes of turbines and different needs, but the Recipe Book has covered most people’s requirements.  There are some pages about alternator design near the end.

Since then the ‘metric edition’ of the book has sold about 1000 copies each year and the later ‘North American’ edition that uses Inches and AWG wire sizes has sold at the same rate.

The book has been translated into Italian, Dutch, French,Spanish, German, Hungarian and Kiswahili.

I continue to use the book for teaching and I’m in constant contact with home-builders around the world, so new ideas are constantly surfacing.  For example here is a method for optimising coil thickness that I developed lately:

The Wind Turbine Recipe Book latest edition can be ordered using Paypal from my web site and reaches most people within five days.

The 2010 edition in metric units is also available from amazon.com as a Kindle book.  (UK readers amazon.co.uk will find the kindle version here) (amazon.de here)

    Hi

Is your book available for purchase electronically? I would like to order it but the mail here in Ivory Coast is not very reliable. I am looking to build a larger, sturdier unit now that I have experimented with 300 watt units out of wood.

I have located block ferrite magnets here in the junkyards and I know you have spoken favorably of their use compared to neodymium magnets. I am also currently building a voltage regulator from scrapped components in the junkyards. It has been quite an experience learning in the inside and outs of this field. So many knowledgeable people providing guidance and teaching me about circuitry and the like. It has helped me to learn what I really understand and what I have just done because that’s what everyone does.

Look forward to hearing from you about your book with the different designs for variable sizes.

    Regards,

    Karana

Dear Sir, I would like to know the possibility of a translation of the Portuguese language (Brazil). If possible sending via E-mail in PDF format for all courses for the manufacture of horizontal and vertical turbines. Thank U

I purchased a copy of your wind turbine receipe book on 8th December and is stated 5 days for delivery however I still received no book could you please advise me when I can receive this book please

    thanks trisha

      Hi Trisha,
Sorry it’s so slow. That would have been sent from here on the morning on the 10th (we only have postal collections 3 times a week) so it has been a week already. I hope it has not gone astray. The post office is pretty maxed out just now with Christmas. Please let me know if it doesn’t show up and we’ll sort something out. We don’t guarantee five day delivery, and I am sorry if the site gives that impression. But five days is a normal delivery time.
      All the best,
      Hugh

    Hello Hugh,
I just today received a copy of your windturbine recipe book 2011 , from a retailer on Amazon, expecting to receive a paperback book. However it was printed on A3 and stapled together the cost was/is near £10. What format is your intended version and will you receive any royalties from the seller “one to remember” on Amazon UK site.
I also ordered the North American unit version and received the metric 2011 version.
I felt as your the author that I should inform you of this.

      hi John,

I am sorry if you find the book poor value for money and I am willing to refund you the money if you post it back to me. Nobody has told me that before.

I mostly have them printed in a folded over and stapled format simply because it is so practical as well as being so cheap. It opens easily and lies flat unlike bound format which is stubbornly difficult to keep open. And I have an irrational? hatred of spiral binding. I think the stapled format is a delight personally. It has worked well for me for many years.

I am sorry that the ebay seller (who is known to me, as he buys small quantities from time to time from us) sent you the wrong edition. That’s a matter you should take up with him. I’d always recommend buying from us direct, but that is mainly because it’s more profitable to me that way.

Anyway I hate to think you are disappointed, and am happy to buy the book back off you if so (although I will end up losing money that way).

      Best wishes,

      Hugh

    Hi Hugh –
Which university do you think is doing the best work in wind turbine blade aerodynamics these days?
    Thanks!

    Hi Hugh,
My name is Henry, from Indonesia.
Currently I am working in a Taiwan small wind turbine manufacturer as a mechanical engineer.
I am interested to translate your book into Indonesian (or Bahasa Indonesia).
    Is that plausible?
    Thanks.

    Henry

  8. Zenon Van Deventer says:

    Hi Hugh,

Thanks for the great book you made (2009 version). I had a peek at about a year ago and since then made 3 blades but didn’t get to finish my first turbine. However there is an organisation in South Africa that is offering to provide money for green energy initiatives and I would like to approach them to assist financially in starting a project where many axial flux wind turbines can be build using your basic design, and perhaps somewhere in the future getting big industry into the manufacture process to mass produce the parts redesigned to be built with materials will allow for cost effective units and yet still be created by the entrepreneur.

Firstly, are there many or considerable changes between the 2009 version and the 2011 version of your manual and secondly what sort of advice could you give me for approaching such a venture?

    Best Regards,
    Zenon Van Deventer
